SUMMARY:Netherby Hall Botanical Painting Workshop: A Day with Marianne Hazlewood
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning Botanical Artist Marianne Hazlewood at Netherby Hall Victorian Walled Gardens for a day of practical botanical illustrations.\nSuitable for Beginners +\nSaturday\, 13th July 2024 – 10 am til 5 pm (lunch included with your ticket) \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n \n\n\nCome and stay at Netherby Hall and spend the day with Marianne Hazlewood in the Victorian Walled Garden. Tickets are available on our website below\, or by calling 01228 792732.\n \nWe would love to welcome you to the splendid Walled Garden at Netherby Hall. The Victorian Walled Garden has gone through recent refurbishments with our amazing team under the leadership of Head Gardener\, Lorraine Pearson. We are reinstating some of the original features and creating cutting beds and we supply The Penton Bridge Inn Michelin-starred restaurant with greens throughout the year. \n \n \n \n\n\n \n \n \n\n\nArtist Marianne Hazlewood will talk about the history of botanical illustration and give you insights into her artistic practice and will take you through some basic steps to get you started with your botanical art piece\, with watercolour paints and equipment provided. \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nWe will start the day with a brief introduction to botanical illustration in the Summer House\, and then take a short stroll with Lorraine and Marianne through the Walled Garden. You can choose and pick your specimen from a selection of plants in our cutting beds. Marianne will then show you how to make preparatory sketches. You will discover how to closely observe your specimen\, learn about its structure and botany\, and transfer your refined sketches onto watercolour paper. \nLunch will be served in the Orangery at Netherby Hall\, located within the main building. \nIn the afternoon Marianne will show you how to colour match your specimen\, working with watercolour to match shades and tones. Then you will begin to paint your specimen. \nThe day’s activities will be accompanied by examples of Marianne’s botanical artwork and a display of Netherby Hall pictures\, including the Walled Garden\, Summer House\, and last year’s cutting beds in full bloom. \nWe expect the full day to last six hours. \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\nAccurate botanical illustration is a slow\, careful\, and meditative process\, so expect to take your painting home with you to finish. Please note you will be able to purchase some materials to take home to finish your artwork. \n\nNote that this is weather dependent\, and we may move part of the session to indoor accommodation in the Orangery.\n\nAbout Marianne Hazlewood. \nMarianne Hazlewood\, a graduate of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh\, is an award-winning artist\, based in the Scottish Borders. Marianne is represented by the prestigious Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh\, where her most recent solo exhibition ran from 3-25 May 2024. She has won awards from the Royal Horticultural Society\, Botanical Images Scotia\, and Visual Arts Scotland. Later this year\, her work will be on show in the prestigious Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation International exhibition as well as the American Society of Botanical Artists Annual Show\, in Pittsburgh and New York City.

SUMMARY:Garden Open Day – Visit the restored Walled Garden
DESCRIPTION:In association with the National Garden Scheme\nAdmission: Adult: £6.00 – Child: Free \nTickets are no longer available to book online\, but will be available on the gate. \nNetherby Hall garden covers approximately 36 acres and consists of a 1.5 acre walled kitchen garden with herbaceous borders\, a Victorian pleasure ground\, woodlands with many fine specimen trees\, lawns with Azaleas\, Rhododendrons and a wildflower meadow. \nThe garden really comes to life in spring with an extended performance of flowering bulbs from Snowdrops and Aconites in the early spring followed by many varieties of Daffodils then Bluebells in late May and June with Tulips in the walled garden and Irises in the pleasure ground. \nNetherby Hall is built on the site of a Roman Fort\, Castra Exploratorum\, a frontier garrison for the Roman army and the location has been occupied by various settlements before and since. There is some evidence that there were settlements at Netherby long before the Romans came and so there is probably a history of gardening here that stretches back into the mists of time. \nThe gardens in their present form date back to the latter half of the 18th century\, there is date of 1786 on one of the beams in the present Head Gardeners’ house which gives an estimated age for the walled garden. This matches up with the tenure of Dr Robert Graham who implemented an extensive remodelling of the house during this period. An article by James Dickson dated 8th February 1877 in the Journal of Horticulture and Cottage Gardener describes the garden in some detail. He mentions that many of the trees had reached maturity indicating that the grounds had been laid out for some time\, good evidence for this being the late 18th century. He goes on to describe flower beds with bedding schemes typical of Victorian gardens. He also goes into some detail describing all the different glasshouses and what was grown in them. \nDiscussions with local residents indicate that the walled garden has been used for growing commercial crops such as tomatoes and chrysanthemums. There are also photographs thought to date from around the 1950s which show nearly all the walled garden covered with glasshouses. They have now been demolished and the present owners have initiated a programme of garden restoration. The new glasshouses are Victorian replicas\, but with biomass heating linked to an electronic climate control system\, with heated beds and benches for the year-round production of micro veg and other salad crops. Other produce that requires warmth\, such as tomatoes\, aubergines and peppers\, are grown in season. Grapevines will be trained underneath the glasshouse roof and peaches\, apricots and nectarines will be espaliered against the walls. This year will see the addition of no-dig beds and areas specifically earmarked for the cultivation of cut flowers and new fruits\, including a hot bed trial for melons. \nThe kitchen garden is being put back into use for its original purpose of growing vegetables for the kitchens at the nearby Pentonbridge Inn\, an award-winning restaurant with rooms. \nFurther information \nEntry to the grounds between 10 am and 4 pm on Sunday May 14\, 2023. \nGeneral admission is £6 per person (children free) \nTickets are no longer available to book online\, but will be available on the gate. \n Bedding plants and supercrops in the glasshouses Traditional Victorian Glasshouses Walled Garden Woman with Wheelbarrow Sunny Day in Walled Garden rows of crops in the walled gardens Bedding plants sitting waiting to be planted Doorway in Walled Garden Flower Row in Walled Garden Flowers in Walled Garden Inside Traditional Victorian Glasshouses Walled Garden Planting new crops in the walled garden Row of Flowers in Walled Garden Working Inside Traditional Victorian Glasshouses Walled Garden Weeding the Walled Garden Sundial in Walled Garden
