Don’t forget to look up at the world-famous painted gold stars on the ceiling – and call in for a coffee in the excellent cafe in the Cathedral’s monastic gardens.

The ultimate wet – and dry – weather attraction for kids, Walby Farm Park, near Carlisle, has everything you need to keep youngsters entertained (which of course means happy adults too). With an enormous indoor play area, lots of opportunities to meet the animals, and an array of outdoor activities to let off steam, it’s the kids, not the adults, who will be run off their feet.

Well-worth the 45-minute drive deep into the epic Northumberland landscape, Kielder Water and Forest Park is home to England’s largest forest and the biggest man-made lake in Northern Europe. This is an outdoor adventure playground for cyclists, walkers – and anyone who just wants to take in the awe-inspiring views. Don’t miss the award-winning art and architecture trail. Top tip: Make sure you book well in advance if you want to see the stars from the renowned Kielder Observatory.

Head north of the border into Dumfries and Gallway to the Caerlaverock Wetland Centre which draws visitors from across the UK for its spectacular seasonal wildlife watching. From wading birds to bats, and birds of prey to dragonflies, Caerlaverock has it all – and much, much more.
The Netherby Hall Car Show is held annually in August and showcases rare vintage cars, classic motors and performance supercars. You’ll find a range of food, drink and craft stalls to keep everyone entertained. This year’s event takes place over the weekend August 5th and 6th. The Lake District honeypot of Keswick is about an hour’s drive from Netherby Hall, where you’ll find iconic picture-perfect Lakes views and plenty of surrounding fells to get a birds-eye view of Derwentwater, which sits next to the town. If you’d rather take in the sights from the water, then Keswick Launch runs a regular service, with stops along the lake.

Less than a 40-minute drive from Netherby Hall, the lovely Lake District village of Caldbeck is an excellent starting point for walks into the Northern Fells – and a quieter alternative to the busy tourist hubs of the central lakes in peak season.
