Suitable for Beginners +

Saturday, 13th July 2024 - 10 am til 5 pm (lunch included with your ticket)

Come and stay at Netherby Hall and spend the day with Marianne Hazlewood in the Victorian Walled Garden. Tickets are available on our website below, or by calling 01228 792732.

We would love to welcome you to the splendid Walled Garden at Netherby Hall. The Victorian Walled Garden has gone through recent refurbishments with our amazing team under the leadership of Head Gardener, Lorraine Pearson. We are reinstating some of the original features and creating cutting beds and we supply The Penton Bridge Inn Michelin-starred restaurant with greens throughout the year.

Marianne Hazlewood

Artist Marianne Hazlewood will talk about the history of botanical illustration and give you insights into her artistic practice and will take you through some basic steps to get you started with your botanical art piece, with watercolour paints and equipment provided.

Botanical Art event

We will start the day with a brief introduction to botanical illustration in the Summer House, and then take a short stroll with Lorraine and Marianne through the Walled Garden. You can choose and pick your specimen from a selection of plants in our cutting beds. Marianne will then show you how to make preparatory sketches. You will discover how to closely observe your specimen, learn about its structure and botany, and transfer your refined sketches onto watercolour paper.

Lunch will be served in the Orangery at Netherby Hall, located within the main building.

In the afternoon Marianne will show you how to colour match your specimen, working with watercolour to match shades and tones. Then you will begin to paint your specimen.

The day's activities will be accompanied by examples of Marianne’s botanical artwork and a display of Netherby Hall pictures, including the Walled Garden, Summer House, and last year's cutting beds in full bloom.

We expect the full day to last six hours.

Accurate botanical illustration is a slow, careful, and meditative process, so expect to take your painting home with you to finish. Please note you will be able to purchase some materials to take home to finish your artwork.

  • Note that this is weather dependent, and we may move part of the session to indoor accommodation in the Orangery.
