Netherby Hall

We’re thrilled to bring you a deep dive into the history of Netherby Hall, courtesy of its owners, Gerald and Margo Smith. This story takes us from ancient Roman times through the turbulent era of the Border Reivers, highlighting how Netherby Hall has transformed over centuries into the beautiful estate it is today. Let’s step back in time and uncover the layers of history that make Netherby so unique.

The Roman Foundations

Our story begins in the 3rd century when Roman legions arrived, making Netherby an outpost to secure Britain’s northern frontier. Roman influence transformed the area, and though they left in the early 5th century, many of their innovations lived on. Despite the ‘Dark Ages’ that followed, priests and monks continued to write and keep histories, preserving the remnants of Roman civilization. The local Britons maintained Roman practices and traded with the Mediterranean long after the empire withdrew.

The Anglo-Saxon Arrival

Around the 6th century, new settlers from Saxony, Frisia, and Jutland arrived, gradually transforming Britain’s eastern and southern regions. While these settlers brought new customs, Cumbria and the Borders held on to much of their Roman-British heritage. Recent DNA evidence confirms that Anglo-Saxon influence was more about settlement than conflict, leading to a culture that fused Roman, British, and Anglo-Saxon elements in our region.

The Border Reivers and the Debatable Land

Centuries later, as England and Scotland’s tensions grew, Netherby found itself at the heart of a volatile borderland. This ‘Debatable Land,’ lying along the Rivers Esk and Liddle, became an area claimed by both kingdoms. The Border Reivers—clans such as the Armstrongs, Grahams, and Elliots—became legendary, living by their own rules and loyalties. These families defended their territories fiercely, and stories of raids, allegiances, and skirmishes became embedded in Netherby’s history.

Netherby’s Transformation

In these challenging times, the estate evolved from a fortified stronghold into a larger community. Peel towers, like the one that is now part of Netherby Hall, were built to protect locals during unrest. Over time, Netherby transformed from a defensive fortification to a grand estate, each generation adding new layers to its rich story.
